Queensland Surfing

With its year-round sunshine, gorgeous beaches and perfect waves, Queensland is a surfer’s delight. The best surfing beaches in Queensland are in the south-east of the state and provide many opportunities for great surfing.

The Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast are both located only about an hour from Brisbane (see map) and provide an unforgettable Queensland surfing holiday, whether you’re a beginner or a pro.

Cyclone season, from December to March, is the best time to take a surfing trip to Queensland. While the cyclones themselves keep further north, they do result in sometimes massive waves further south.

Noosa at the Sunshine Coast, is a great surfing spot, and hosts the annual Noosa Festival of Surfing in March. Check out Noosa Longboards while you’re in town, for all your equipment, Sunshine Coast surfing lessons and surf reports. Coolum is also a great day in the water.

Because the Sunshine Coast has smaller surfing breaks than the Gold Coast, you don’t have to be an expert to surf there, and you’ll find some more secluded beaches to enjoy a quiet time out on the water.

In comparison, the Gold Coast, south of Brisbane, enjoys an international reputation for great surfing opportunities and exciting times. If you’re after surfing lessons, the Gold Coast has many to choose from, including kite surfing lessons. For beaches, try Burleigh, Currumbin, and Kirra.

Or take a camping trip with the 4WD and head to Fraser Island. This sand island has great surfing beaches as well as rainforests, native animals and even whale watching.
