South Australia is often underestimated as a surfing destination because much of the beach is difficult to access. Towards the Nullabor Plain, cliffs make those beaches impossible to surf. Some South Australian beaches require a 4WD to reach, and others are inhabited by Great White sharks. However, for surfers who enjoy looking for new and unusual breaks, South Australia is the place to go.
The great spots in South Australia seem to be situated mainly in Yorke Peninsula and Eyre Peninsula. Greenly Beach, on the Eyre Peninsula is popular. And south of Penong is one of the most famous surfing beaches in South Australia, Cactus Beach. The breaks here are quite strong but experienced surfers will have a great time here. Handy camping spots are dotted throughout the area, as well as inexpensive beachfront units and hotels of South Australia.
Yorke Peninsula also has some dangerous conditions, so check the Adelaide and South Australian surf reports and ask locals for advice before you go. Innes National Park has plenty of great breaks and is home to the annual Cutloose Quiksilver Yorke's Surfing Classic. Experienced surfers should also try Berry Bay, Pondalowie Bay, and Daly Head. Cosy lodges, cottage and hotel accommodation is available close by, and camping in designated spots. Yorke Peninsula also has calmer beaches for swimming, relaxing and kite surfing in South Australia.
Beginners are best to stay closer to Adelaide city where surfing is popular and the waves are small and choppy, but ideal for practice. Take surf lessons, and try something new like snorkelling or kayaking.
