Western Australia Surfing

If you love your surfing, Western Australia is ripe for exploration. So much of the coastline is covered in wild, thick bushland and only accessible by 4WD. But many of these spots have appeared in surfing movies purely because someone has gone to the trouble of finding them.

The southern coast of Western Australia has beaches that are often inaccessible. The border to Esperance is mostly desert, so it’s best to avoid that area till you reach great conditions in Esperance. Then down in the south-west corner the coast opens up and you’ll find yourself faced with some of the biggest waves that hit the Australian coastline.

Margaret River is one of the best surfing spots in the state, hosting the annual Margaret River Pro. Surfer’s Point, in Margaret River, will make your jaw drop, with its gorgeous scenery and enormous swell. Yallingup Reef is also popular for 10 foot waves.

Perth is such a great spot to relax, sightsee and find accommodation. The surfing conditions in Perth Western Australian beaches are probably best suited for beginners. But it is also a great starting point for exploring the south-west region. While you may find the surf in Perth’s beaches a little tame, you can drive down the coast and do some exploring.

Once you head further north up the coast of Western Australia, the beaches are better, but harder to get to. Rottnest Island, off the coast of Western Australia is a top surfing spot and a fantastic holiday destination, with natural environment, history and comfortable yet inexpensive accommodation.
